The Best Cursor Alternative for CLI Coding Agents
Cursor is an AI-first code editor (a VS Code fork) with bundled model access and cloud/background agents, billed per seat with inference included.
If Cursor isn't the fit, the usual next step is another AI-first editor. Where Cursor is strong
- A full AI IDE: inline edits, tab-completion, and chat in one polished app.
- Inference is bundled, one subscription covers the model usage.
- Large funding and momentum, plus cloud and background agents.
Where Forkbench differs
- Keys move out of the environment and into Vault (Pro). An agent runs a command that needs a token without the token entering its context.
- Folders the macOS kernel enforces. A Thread can be locked to the folders the job is about, applied as each shell starts and inherited by every process it spawns, so an agent cannot read or write outside them. Builds still run and the network is untouched.
- Your editor is not part of the deal. Whatever you were using before Cursor is what you go back to, and it keeps every setting.
- You stop paying for inference twice. The agent you already subscribe to does the work, and we add nothing to the bill.
- What the agents work out is written down and sealed the same way. The plan and the blockers live on a board that survives the session, not in a chat you scroll back through.
The bottom line
The question is not whether Cursor is good, it is whether you want the editor and the AI to be the same product. If you do, nothing here beats it and switching would cost you the inline edits and completion you use all day. If you don't, and especially if you already pay for Claude Code or Codex, then Cursor is a second AI bill for a job your existing subscription already does.
